The honest limits of sound as a sole channel

Anything a person must act on precisely needs to exist somewhere they can look.

There is a category of material where audio should never be the only carrier, and it is easy to identify. If somebody has to do the thing exactly right, in order, with specific values, at a specific point, then delivering it only as sound guarantees errors. The listener will not remember the sequence, cannot check it while their hands are occupied, and has no way to confirm they have it correct. Every failure that follows was designed in the moment the medium was chosen.

The same applies to anything with consequences attached to getting it wrong: entitlements, obligations, deadlines, thresholds, anything where an approximate understanding is worse than none because it produces confident action on a wrong basis. Audio is very good at conveying that such a thing exists and why it matters, and quite bad at conveying its content accurately. Splitting those two jobs is not timidity. It is putting the part that must be exact where exactness is possible.

None of this diminishes the medium. A tool with clear limits is more useful than one with vague claims, because you can rely on it inside its range. Sound carries meaning, motive, reasoning, atmosphere and the sense of a person thinking, and it carries them further into ordinary life than anything else available. It does not carry precision, structure or reference. Build with that division firmly in mind and the medium repays it. Ignore it and the failures arrive quietly, in the listener's understanding, where nobody sees them.
